The student visa (subclass 500) does one thing: it lets you live in Australia while you study a registered course at a registered provider. Everything else about it — work rights, family members, what happens after — hangs off that single purpose.

What it allows

While your course is in session you can work a capped number of hours per fortnight, and usually unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks. You can bring eligible family members, and you must hold health cover (OSHC) for the whole stay. The visa lasts as long as your course plus a short buffer at the end.

What it expects of you

Two obligations catch people out. First, you must remain enrolled and maintain satisfactory attendance and progress — providers report problems to the Department, and enough problems can end the visa. Second, since 2024 every applicant must satisfy the Genuine Student requirement: the Department wants to see that study is your real purpose for coming, backed by your history, your course choice, and your circumstances. Answers that read like a script, or a course that makes no sense against your background, are where refusals start.

The part nobody explains early enough

The student visa is also the foundation of every later option. The course you pick determines whether you can get a post-study work visa, whether your qualification counts for a skills assessment, and whether your occupation appears on a skilled list. People routinely choose the cheapest or fastest course, graduate, and only then discover the pathway they wanted needs a different qualification entirely. The time to look at the end of the journey is before you enrol, not after.

Common ways it goes wrong

  • Course-hopping downward (from higher to lower qualifications) without a convincing reason — it undermines the genuine student picture.
  • Letting enrolment lapse between courses, which can leave you without a valid basis for the visa.
  • Working beyond the capped hours — providers and employers both leave records, and breaches follow you into future applications.
  • Treating the visa as a work permit with study attached. Officers can see that pattern, and it shows up at extension and future-visa time.
